PROPAGANDA at the Barbican

8 - 9 May 2021, The Barbican

Alter your frames of perception. Saxophonist, clarinetist and composer Shabaka Hutchings curates this weekend of music, spoken word and art, exploring propaganda’s ever-presence in our lives.

Shabaka Hutchings is one of the most prolific artists in the UK’s thriving jazz scene. Over the weekend, he’ll be performing in a number of guises: solo and with his bands Sons of Kemet and Shabaka and The Ancestors. He’s also invited an array of friends to perform. Skin Deep will curate a programme of free events and interventions including the work of Resolve Collective.

It’s not an interrogation of propaganda as linked to a political agenda, but as a way that information is conveyed to large groups of people. ‘If you’re given the privilege of visibility and a voice in society, how are you spreading your message, and using your message?’, says Shabaka. ‘I want audience members to leave seeing their reality in an expanded fashion.’

More artists to be announced, including a Saturday night concert in the Hall.
