Sonic Transmissions Series

29 - 29 Sep 2019, ICA, The Mall, London, UK

We are excited to announce our first ever Sonic Transmissions series, taking place across three different venues in London, over three weeks this September, with these magical artists Cassie Kinoshi and House of Absolute.

Skin Deep co-founder, Anu Henriques, tells us a little about the sonic journey the team have been on over the last three years and what we have in store for you this September.

Back in April 2016 at our first Skin Deep event in London, I had a conversation with saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings. We talked about the possibilities of creating spaces where people could come together and collectively listen to the work of musicians – live, and on a proper sound system – where the audience could ask questions about what they were hearing in that moment, and for musicians to talk about their process, influences, politics and the narratives that they are inspired to tell.

After a couple of months of marinating and planning, the first Sonic Transmissions session took place in November 2016 at the ICA with Ahnansé (ft. Yussef Dayes, Mansur Brown, Sheila Maurice-Grey and Shirley Tetteh) a multi-instrumentalist, composer and producer who founded weekly music jam, the now legendary Steam Down. We then went on to collaborate on sessions with Nérija, Brother Portrait, and of course Shabaka himself (twice!) at the Total Refreshment Centre in 2017 (featuring Theon Cross and Max Hallett) and at Brainchild Festival in 2018. And then earlier this year, as part of Tobi Kyeremateng’s Babylon Festival at the Bush Theatre, we collaborated with drummer, composer and producer Moses Boyd in a sonic exploration of the immense creative influence of Black and Brown people on London culture.

Which brings us here…

We are excited to announce our first ever Skin Deep Sonic Transmissions series, taking place across three different venues in London, with these phenomenal artists: Cassie Kinoshi and House of Absolute.

Each event will be a collaborative and immersive experience between us, the musicians and the audience. Part listening party, part live jam, part in conversation – these are no ordinary gigs. Join the Skin Deep family on this magical sonic journey.

SUNDAY 15th SEPTEMBER, Roundhouse: Join us for an evening of conversation, live performance and collective listening with award-winning London-based composer, arranger and alto-saxophonist Cassie Kinoshi. Cassie is best known for her work with jazz septet NÉRIJA (Parliamentary Jazz Award Winners 2017, Best Newcomer), Afrobeat band KOKOROKO and her own large ensemble SEED, which has been shortlisted for the 2019 Hyundai Mercury Prize. This special collaborative event will explore traditions, legacies and spirituality.

SUNDAY 29th SEPTEMBER, ICA: House of Absolute is an all female powerhouse cultivating honest expression through dance and music. This debut collaboration weaves together conversations with House of Absolute curator/creator Julia Cheng, along with live dance, music and spoken word performances. We’ll be exploring identity, politics, music and style to offer an alternative to the way we usually experience dance, movement and sound.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, Roxanne Tataei has had to cancel the event due to take place on the 21st September. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and will issue a full refund to those who have purchased tickets.

If you love music, performance and especially UK music, we expect to see you there!
